Temperature is a fault reporting itself early

Most failures announce themselves as heat first. A loose electrical connection runs hot long before it fails, wet insulation reads cold long before the ceiling stains, and a bearing running out of tolerance shows as a warm spot on an otherwise even surface. None of that is visible to an ordinary camera.

A radiometric sensor records an actual temperature value for every pixel, which is what separates a survey from a picture of a warm thing. Flown from the air it covers roofs, facades, arrays and yards that are slow to reach on foot, and it does it while everything stays running.

How it works

Agree what counts as a finding

We establish which temperature differences matter for the asset in question, because the threshold that matters on an electrical connection is not the threshold that matters on a roof.

Plan around the conditions

Thermal depends on conditions more than most work. Time of day, cloud, wind and how long a surface has been loaded all change what the sensor can see, so the flight is scheduled around them rather than fitted in.

Survey

The asset is flown at consistent height and angle so temperatures are comparable across the whole surface rather than distorted by the geometry of the capture.

Report to a position

Anomalies are marked, measured against their surroundings and tied to a position, so somebody can walk to the exact spot with the imagery in hand.

Common questions

Can thermal see through walls or roofs?

No. Thermal reads surface temperature only. What makes it useful on a building is that what is happening inside, such as missing insulation or trapped moisture, changes the surface temperature above it in a pattern that can be interpreted. It is inference from the surface, not x-ray vision.

Does it have to be a particular time of day?

Usually. Most building and envelope work is flown around dusk, when surfaces have loaded during the day and are releasing heat at different rates. Electrical work is different again and wants the asset under load. We will tell you the window before booking rather than after.

How is this different from the thermal on your inspection page?

The sensor is the same. Infrastructure Inspections is about the condition of a structure and uses thermal as one tool among several. This service is for jobs where heat itself is the question being asked.
