Finding the heat that is still there

The dangerous part of a wildfire is often not the flame front — it is what gets left behind after it passes. Heat holds in root systems, stumps and duff for days, invisible from the surface, waiting for wind. Finding those pockets by walking blackened ground is slow, uncomfortable, and easy to get wrong.

Thermal survey reads that heat directly and reports it as coordinates, so crews are tasked to a position rather than a search pattern. Flown at intervals it also answers the harder question: whether the ground is genuinely cooling, or whether something down there is still holding.
